As a high school student, I was looking for a way to learn more about bioinformatics since it’s not offered at my school. That’s when I found the University of California, San Diego course called “Biology Meets Programming: Bioinformatics for Beginners.”

It was the perfect opportunity to explore bioinformatics at my own pace. The course is great for beginners and high school students because it covers the basics, like algorithms, and even gives you the chance to try coding them yourself.

The course introduces bioinformatics in a really approachable way. Some of the topics I learned included:

  • DNA and replication

  • Molecular clocks

  • Algorithms like Greedy Algorithms, Motif Searches, and the Gibbs Sampler

Taking this course really changed how I understand the connection between coding and biological data. It made it clear how computational tools can help scientists study genes, proteins, and diseases.

If you’re curious about bioinformatics, this course is a solid starting point. It’s beginner-friendly, hands-on, and best of all, it’s free!
